Purvis Young (b.1942, Miami, Florida; d.2010, Miami, Florida)
Purvis Young was a self-taught urban expressionist whose paintings reflect the problems and hopes of his poverty stricken Overtown community. He frequently used symbolisms to depict overcrowding, drug addiction, police brutality, war, freedom and liberty. Young often painted human heads with elongated faces and figures with distorted bellies with arms stretched up toward heaven. Young's works were often inspired by books he studied on the great masters, like Rembrandt, Van Gogh, El Greco and Gauguin.
Works by Purvis Young have been exhibited worldwide. His art can be found in the permanent collections of many prestigious museums including the Metropolitan Museum of art, The Smithsonian American Art Museum, The American Folk Art Museum, The Corcoran School of Art Museum, The Perez Art Museum and over 50 others. Purvis was also the featured artist in the Venice Biennale 2019.
